You are about to begin a very peculiar and different visit experience. We will climb the main tower and walk up high along the parapets of the fortress and under the roofs of the temple. You have to walk with very carefully, in particular the accesses and limited height sections.
We find ourselves now in what was the palatial residence that was set up in the eastern part of the compound, perhaps intended to house the royal family in their numerous visits. Hence the elaborate windows with double lateral benches. These are «courting» windows, as is very common in the domestic architecture of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The mechinals or weep holes which can be seen on the windows indicate the original level of the slabs and roofs. Later the hospital of Santa Maria was located in this space.
Through a door next to the landing of the spiral staircase, we enter the interior of the tower. We are about to ascend to the second level of the compound. The tower level we are visiting is Romanesque, and was erected circa 1100. As we go up we will see that the tower incorporates the Gothic language in its configuration.
When we reach the next level of the tower press number 13.
