Welcome to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Ujué. For centuries this place was a sanctuary-fortress and this is what we will discover during the visit. However its defensive function lost its value long ago. Today Ujué survives thanks to the faith and care of the town’s residents and the devotion of the pilgrims from neighbouring locations. For generations, the faithful from all walks of life have relied on the mediation of the Virgin of Ujué to favour those who entrusted themselves to her. It is not strange that when the King of Aragon, Pedro IV, claimed to the Pope that the sanctuary belonged to Monteragón, basing his claim on the fact that, in his own words, “God performs many miracles there every day”. The chronicles state that during the eighteenth century the presbytery fence displayed hundreds of votive offerings. And today, how many pilgrims and faithful do not feel favoured by the intercession of Saint Mary? During Sundays and May holidays, pilgrimages to Ujué are still a living tradition in many towns of Navarre and Ribera. The pilgrimages commence at the end of April and take up all the May festivities.
Today, in addition to its spiritual value, the almost one thousand years of worship to Santa María de Uxue have shaped an extraordinary cultural heritage which enriches both the people who live on its slopes, as well as all the people who visit the sanctuary. We welcome you to the sanctuary of Santa María de Ujué.
