We are in the southern atrium of the sanctuary, with our eyes already set on the great southern façade. The paving slabs we walk on follow the lines of the sepulchral casing built in the eighteenth century. We are walking over a cemetery. In fact, the entire platform of the sanctuary had a documented cemetery use, at least between the ninth century and the nineteenth century. A thousand years of archaeological, documentary and visual testimonies historically illustrate the sacred nature of the space we are about to visit.
